Scott Pilgrim (Movie)

Seriously, I forgot to write about this? What the hell is my problem?

There are some movies that are taken from books and comics that don’t do their source material justice. Thankfully, this is not one of those movies. It did take me a while to see it, I would have loved to see it in the theater, but it just didn’t happen. I had to wait until I got this free five dollar credit at Amazon, and then watched it on my computer.

And I loved every moment of it.

There were seriously moments that I felt like I was reading it again. Scenes that were taken directly from the pages, right there on the screen. It was a lot of fun. They picked really good actors to fill the roles of the characters. I don’t think that anybody else would have done as well. I loved the cast. Loved them.

Michael Cera is absolutely wonderful. I know that I’m saying this with a heavy bias. I’m a very huge fan of Arrested Development and have had kind of a nerd crush on him since then. I’ve done my best to try to see everything that he’s been in, and there’s very little of it that I don’t absolutely love. I was glad to see that he was the main character when the hype about this movie started. I had, actually, just read the first book, and was pleased with the choice.

I’ve heard people say that they didn’t like this movie because they didn’t understand what was going on, or because it was too much like a comic. To them, I have to say, what the fuck. First of all, it’s not like the story is that hard to follow. There are some odd things that happen, yes, but they’re not so out there that you can’t figure it out. Secondly, it IS a comic, so… wouldn’t the fact that it’s a lot like the book it comes from play positively? I sure think so. But hey, what do I know, right?

I still don’t own this, and I have no idea why. I think I was waiting at first for some kind of extra special edition. But when that didn’t happen, there’s really no reason that I shouldn’t have bought it. This is a thing I’m going to have to remedy as soon as possible, I think. I’ve been itching to watch it again anyway. Every time I see mention somewhere, I tell myself I should buy and view. Yet I don’t. Clearly, I like to punish myself.

I also have to pick up the rest of the books, which is another thing I have not done. I’m such a bastard to myself.

Brutal Legend

Been a while since I wrote about a game, isn’t it? It’s also been a while since I last had the attention span to do so. I was struggling with the two newest games I have – Overlord 2 and The Godfather 2, and I didn’t know why. Then it dawned on me one day. I needed something that didn’t take a lot of strategy, something I could get lost in for hours without realizing it, and something that would be incredibly fun to play.

Not that either of those games is boring. But there’s a certain amount of thinking that you’ve got to do in both of them in order to advance the game. All I wanted was a game that I could fart around on if I wanted to, and progress the game through when I wanted to, all without having to use too much of my brain.

Somebody suggested to me that I try Brutal Legend, and I have to say that it’s exactly what I was looking for. There are some moments when you have to think about what you’ve got to do, but it’s not the bulk of the game. Plus I can ride around in the car or on animals and just… do that. Or look for the artifacts. All while listening to heavy metal.

Oh, and Jack Black.

The art is beautiful, and the colors are vivid. I love looking at this game. I also love how some people’s hands are way too big for their bodies.

I think I’m about 40% through at this point, so I can’t talk too much about the rest of the game, but so far what I’ve seen, I really like. And on my first night playing, I played for 6 hours. It’s exactly what I needed.
